Liposuction is used to treat excess areas of fat in the body, such as the stomach, hips, thighs, breasts, etc. Something to consider is that liposuction is just as effective for men as it is for women. Whether you’re struggling with “diet-resistant” areas or hope to thin-out parts of your body, liposuction may be a reasonable option.
The best circumstances for liposuction to be successful is targeting areas where there are fat deposits that are out of proportion with the rest of the body. It’s also important to only consider areas where there is a minimal amount of skin since liposuction only removes fat.
Liposuction is quite literally the removal of fat, usually through a hollow tube. While there are many techniques for liposuction, you and your doctor will discuss what the best option is for you at the time of your consultation. There is a possibility that more than one technique will be considered in order to give you the best results.
As with all surgeries, there are risks involved. However, complications during or following a liposuction procedure are rare. Possible risks include:
To further prevent these complications, it’s important to follow your surgeon’s instructions for before, during, and after the procedure.
If you are a smoker, your surgeon will strongly urge you to quit well before your surgery as smoking can interfere with the healing process. Also, medications that can increase the risk of bleeding should be stopped. As this surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure, it’s important to arrange for transportation.
DAY-OF LIPOSUCTION PROCEDURE
Your liposuction procedure will be performed at an outpatient surgical site. You will be given a form of anesthesia, usually local or intravenous, however, you and your doctor will discuss those options during your consultation and decide the best route to take. You will be hooked up to machines that will monitor your vitals during and after the procedure to ensure your safety.
Once your surgery is complete, you will be placed in a recovery area for a few hours where you will be monitored closely. A compression garment will be placed at the surgical site to help what is called “shrinking the skin.” Once your anesthesia wears off you may feel sore.
It’s important to remember that recovery from any procedure will vary greatly from person to person. You’ll be expected to rest for the first few days and to keep the area of surgery elevated as much as possible. You will be asked to continue avoiding any medications that may increase the risk of bleeding. You’ll need to continue wearing the compression garment but if you find it too tight it’s important that you alert your surgeon as soon as possible. Within the first 48 hours, you may notice some swelling and/or bruising; this should alleviate within 7 to 10 days. You will be scheduled for a follow-up with your surgeon to be done within the first week following surgery when your stitches will be removed. Unlike some surgeries, with liposuction, you should be able to return to your normal activities within 10 days.
Once your surgery and recovery are complete, your surgeon will still ask that you come in for appointments at different intervals to ensure your full recovery is going smoothly.
The results of liposuction depend on what your problem areas were. In most cases, it improves the contours of the body and thins the specific area. The good news is that liposuction results are usually long-lasting but can be affected by weight gain, age, and pregnancy.
As liposuction is an elective procedure, it usually won’t be covered by insurance and we understand that cost may be an issue. The cost of the procedure will vary depending on the area you plan to be treated as well as the amount of time it will take in the operative room. Once you complete your initial consultation with us, you’ll be given a final estimate.
