Offering Breast Implants & Breast Augmentation in Arlington Heights, Elgin, Glen Ellyn, Hinsdale, Naperville, Schaumburg, and St. Charles, IL
The reasons for considering a breast augmentation vary from person to person. Patients may seek this procedure due to dissatisfaction with breast size, a lack of proportion of the breasts to the size of their overall body, to correct an unevenness between the two breasts, to regain or enhance the breasts after childbirth or significant weight loss, or to restore the breasts after suffering from breast cancer. Breast augmentation can enhance a patient’s overall self-confidence, so whatever your reason is for seeking this procedure, our office is here to assist.
There are many ways to tell the difference between a poor breast augmentation and a successful one. Signs of a poor breast augmentation may result in overly firm breasts, breasts that are too large in proportion to a patient’s body, or possibly perky to the point that the breasts don’t naturally settle. Successfully-augmented breasts should have a natural fullness, be proportional to your body with natural-looking cleavage and perkiness.
BREAST IMPLANT RISKS
As with any surgery, there is risk involved with a breast augmentation procedure. However, while risks are possible, they are unlikely if you’re healthy and cooperate with Dr. Patel’s instructions and advice before and after your procedure.
Some risks may include:
Again, following your surgeon’s instructions will significantly lower your chance at developing these side-effects.
BREAST AUGMENTATION SURGERY
Following a breast-augmentation, you should be allowed to return home the same-day. You will experience some swelling and discomfort once anesthesia wears off but you will be prescribed pain medication for relief. A few days after your procedure, you will be seen for a follow-up visit to check how you’re coming along following your surgery. Having initial swelling and firmness is normal and should alleviate within six weeks. Your breasts will be taped to reduce scarring and you’ll be advised to wear a surgical support bra for the first 3-4 weeks following your procedure. Stitches at the surgical site usually dissolve within three months or so. Small incision scars will remain but will improve in appearance within 3-9 months following your surgery.
RECOVERY FROM BREAST IMPLANT SURGERY
You should gradually ease yourself back into your normal routine. Light exercise, which should not include your arms, can commence after one week of recovery. Heavy lifting and exercising should be avoided for the first 4-6 weeks.
LIFESPAN OF BREAST IMPLANTS
Something to consider is that breast implants are not lifetime devices and therefore will not last forever. Implant failure can occur due to injury or trauma to your chest or even spontaneously without any obvious cause. Thankfully, modern implants have a low rupture rate. If your implants sustain any damage, further surgery will be required to remove and replace the implant.
There is no correlation between breast implants and breast cancer. Also, breast implants should not impede your ability to test for possible cancer. You should continue routine self-exams and annual physicals with your primary care physician to maintain your breast health.
BREAST IMPLANT COSTS
Usually, breast augmentation is done for aesthetic purposes and therefore is considered an elective surgery that would not be covered by your insurance. The cost of a breast augmentation varies depending on the severity of your case. An estimated cost will be given after you’ve had your initial consultation.
