Spider veins, or telangiectasias, are small purple and red blood vessels that are often found on the thighs and lower legs of women. Spider veins are hereditary, and can form anywhere on the leg, or sometimes on the face as well. Varicose veins are larger veins that can become raised and are generally blue in color. These veins can be very painful. Neither spider veins nor varicose veins are part of the venous valve system, even though they both carry blood. Sclerotherapy is a simple procedure that can completely remove either type of vein.

During the procedure, a sclerosing solution will be injected into your vein with a micro-needle. The solution will cause the vein to blanch and then slowly disappear. There is very minimal pain for this procedure and the treatment will usually last for 15-20 minutes and will involve multiple injections. This procedure may eliminate you needing to have an invasive surgical procedure.

After the procedure, you may be asked to wear compression stockings to keep constant pressure on the veins to reduce bruising and help the treated veins stay closed. Any bruising around the areas that were treated should go away after a week.

Most people will be able to resume their daily activities right away, but you will be asked to stay away from vigorous activities for the first day. Walking is a great way to keep blood flow going through your other veins. Final results will be visible in a few months’ time.
